ISLAMABAD: The federal government has taken a significant step towards combating climate change by establishing Pakistan’s inaugural “Climate Change Authority” in accordance with the Climate Change Act 2017.
This pivotal development follows a directive from a three-member Supreme Court bench, which emphasized the urgent need for such an authority to address the threats posed by global warming and environmental degradation.
According to the provisions outlined in the Climate Change Act 2017, the headquarters of the newly established authority will be located in Islamabad, with the flexibility to establish additional offices as deemed necessary.
Despite contributing less than 1 percent to global emissions, Pakistan remains one of the most susceptible countries to the adverse effects of climate change.
The nation has experienced a range of climate-related phenomena, including abnormal rainfall patterns, heatwaves, and devastating floods, underscoring the urgent need for proactive measures to mitigate these risks.
The establishment of the Climate Change Authority signals the government’s commitment to addressing environmental challenges and implementing strategies to safeguard the country’s ecological well-being.
By centralizing efforts and resources, the authority aims to enhance coordination among relevant stakeholders and implement effective policies to mitigate and adapt to climate change impacts.
Pakistan has witnessed the devastating consequences of climate change firsthand, as evidenced by the catastrophic floods in 2002, which claimed the lives of over 1,700 people and caused extensive damage amounting to billions of rupees.
Such events underscore the urgency of proactive measures to build resilience and minimize the impact of future environmental disasters.
Moving forward, the Climate Change Authority is poised to play a pivotal role in spearheading climate action initiatives, including mitigation measures, adaptation strategies, and advocacy for sustainable development practices.
By fostering collaboration across sectors and engaging with international partners, Pakistan aims to position itself as a leader in climate resilience and environmental stewardship on the global stage.
As the country grapples with the multifaceted challenges posed by climate change, the establishment of the Climate Change Authority represents a significant milestone in Pakistan’s journey towards building a more sustainable and resilient future for generations to come.
