Students from Pakistan made a remarkable impact at the 65th International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO) 2024, securing silver and bronze medals at the global competition held in Bath, United Kingdom, from July 11 to 22.
Razi Hasan Mansoor from Karachi earned the silver medal, while Muhammad Ahmad Bhatti, also from Karachi, won the bronze medal. Additionally, Muhammad Mehd Arif from Sundus School in Lahore received an “Honorable Mention” for Pakistan.
This success follows recent achievements by Pakistani students, who won bronze medals at the International Biology Olympiad in Astana, Kazakhstan.
The Pakistani team participated in the IMO under the STEM Career Program, a collaboration between the Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan and the Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences (PIEAS) University. The team received training at COMSATS University, Lahore Campus, under the guidance of Prof Dr Sarfaraz Ahmed and Dr Hani Shakir.
The PAEC and PIEAS University organize the National Science Talent Competition annually in four subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Biology. Winners from this competition are selected to represent Pakistan in the International Olympiad.
In the IMO 2024, teams from the United States, China, and South Korea achieved top honors. The US team won with a total score of 192, while India ranked fourth with a score of 167, just behind South Korea.
Indian team member Aditya Mangodi achieved the highest individual performance for India, ranking fifth. The Indian team won four gold medals and one silver medal, with Mangodi, Ananda Bhadhuri, Guwahati Talwar, and Rasil Mathur from Mumbai securing gold, and Arjun Geetha from Delhi winning silver. Siddharth Chopra received an “Honorable Mention.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the Indian team’s performance on X, expressing immense pride in their achievement and noting that the success would inspire more young people and boost the popularity of mathematics.
