Cristiano Ronaldo once again showcased his exceptional talent, scoring his 901st goal to secure a 2-1 victory for Portugal over Scotland in their Nations League match on Sunday.
Having reached the milestone of 900 career goals with his 131st international strike in Thursday’s win against Croatia, Ronaldo showed no signs of slowing down. He came off the bench to propel Portugal to their second consecutive win in Nations League Group A1. The Estadio da Luz in Lisbon erupted in cheers as Ronaldo scored with just two minutes left.
On his 30th birthday, Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes scored Portugal’s equalizer in the second half, following an early lead from Scott McTominay for Scotland.
Portugal manager Roberto Martinez, who humorously mentioned his desire to upset his father-in-law (a Scotland fan) before the match, celebrated the victory with a personal touch. Martinez had met his wife Beth while playing for Scottish club Motherwell in 2001.
Scotland, still searching for their first win over Portugal, remains in a tough spot. Having been beaten 3-2 by Poland at Hampden Park on Thursday, Scotland’s record for 2024 includes just one win in 14 matches, with their sole victory coming against Gibraltar in a friendly.
Scotland’s head coach, Steve Clarke, expressed disappointment, noting that despite Scotland’s efforts, they could not avoid defeat. Clarke lamented the risk of conceding from set pieces, which eventually led to Portugal’s late winner.
Scotland initially took the lead in the seventh minute with Kenny McLean’s superb cross setting up McTominay’s header. Despite Scotland’s early advantage, Portugal pressed hard, with Rafael Leao and Diogo Jota coming close to equalizing.
In the second half, Ronaldo’s impact was immediate. Fernandes’s long-range shot, mishandled by goalkeeper Angus Gunn, led to an equalizer. Cristiano Ronaldo’s backheel pass and subsequent efforts were met with strong saves from Gunn, who also managed to clear a header off the line.
Portugal’s persistence paid off in the 88th minute when Nuno Mendes’s cross was met by Ronaldo for the decisive goal.
