The Israeli military has concluded that there is a “high probability” its airstrike in November resulted in the deaths of three Israeli captives in Gaza. After months of denial, the military acknowledged that its attack on November 10, 2023, which targeted a tunnel used by Hamas Northern Brigade commander Ahmed Ghandour, likely caused the fatalities.
The captives—Corporal Nik Beizer, Sergeant Ron Sherman, and French-Israeli national Elia Toledano—were recovered on December 14, but the cause of death was initially undetermined. The military’s investigation revealed that the captives were held in a tunnel complex used by Ghandour, and at the time of the strike, the presence of hostages was unknown to the Israeli forces.
