Three terrorists were killed and two others escaped during an intelligence-based operation (IBO) in Nankana Sahib, as reported by a Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) spokesperson on Wednesday.
The spokesperson stated that the terrorists had opened fire on the CTD team, leading to an exchange of gunfire. During the crossfire, three of the terrorists were killed by bullets fired by their own comrades, while two others managed to escape. The CTD recovered various items from the scene, including three grenades, three detonators, safety fuse wire, two rifles, ammunition, and explosives.
A search operation is currently underway to apprehend the escaped terrorists. CTD teams have established a checkpoint near the Motorway Nankana Interchange A. The process of identifying the deceased terrorists is ongoing. According to the CTD, the group was planning a major attack on Lahore.
Pakistan has seen a rise in terrorist activity recently, with 59 incidents recorded across the country in August, up from 38 in July. This data comes from the Pak Institute for Peace Studies (PIPS), a think tank based in Islamabad.
In related developments, CTD Punjab arrested nine terrorists last week during 71 IBOs conducted throughout the province. Additionally, on Friday, two terrorists were killed during an operation in Dera Ghazi Khan.
The increase in terrorist activities has prompted intensified security efforts, with the CTD focusing on preemptive operations to dismantle terror networks and prevent planned attacks, particularly in major cities like Lahore. The CTD’s recent actions reflect a broader strategy to counter the growing threat of terrorism in the region.
