ISLAMABAD: Faisal Chaudhry, the legal representative of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan, has clarified that Bushra Bibi, Imran Khan’s wife, is not involved in politics and has only been used to relay messages on his behalf.
Speaking to the media outside Adiala Jail, Faisal Chaudhry stated that Bushra Bibi’s role was limited to conveying messages from Imran Khan to PTI leaders due to the restrictions placed on his communication. “Khan Sahib is not in Bani Gala; he is in jail, and even there, his access is severely restricted,” he said. “Under such circumstances, someone has to deliver the messages.”
He criticized the government’s actions, accusing them of curbing political freedoms and transparency. “The government’s tactics are a blatant violation of democratic principles,” he remarked. He also called for the resignation of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) chairman and the investigation officer following what he described as questionable actions in Imran Khan’s cases.
Claims of Unfair Trial
Faisal Chaudhry alleged that Imran Khan has not been afforded a fair trial, labeling the cases against him as politically driven. “The judiciary has been reduced to a government tool,” he claimed. “Post the 26th Amendment, it feels like we are witnessing kangaroo courts in operation.”
He highlighted the challenges faced by the opposition and efforts by PTI’s political committee to rally support for their cause. According to Chaudhry, Imran Khan has urged the public to defend democracy, which he says is under severe threat in Pakistan. He also accused judges Qazi Faez Isa and Sikandar Sultan Raja of undermining PTI deliberately.
Legal Proceedings Update
In related developments, NAB has requested the Islamabad High Court to annul the sentences handed down to Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi and to remand the case for further proceedings. NAB prosecutor Amjad Pervez expressed concerns about the trial’s process and supported the suspension of sentences.
Barrister Ali Zafar, representing Imran Khan, argued that the trial was rushed and violated legal rights. He pointed out several procedural flaws, including the denial of adequate cross-examination opportunities and the late-night recording of Bushra Bibi’s statement on January 29.
Justice Farooq instructed Zafar to consult Imran Khan regarding NAB’s proposal, cautioning, “If you oppose NAB’s proposal, we will decide on merit.” Justice Aurangzeb added that if procedural errors are ignored, the court would either order a retrial or proceed to address the case’s merits directly.
The case remains under review as both sides prepare for the next legal steps.
