Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced a $5 million reward for anyone who facilitates the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas in Gaza. The announcement, made during a visit to the Gaza border, also guarantees a safe exit for individuals and their families who aid in freeing the captives.
“Whoever brings us a hostage will find a safe way out for themselves and their family. We will also provide $5 million for each hostage,” Netanyahu stated during the visit, which included an inspection of the Netzarim Corridor, a critical access route constructed by the Israeli military to separate northern and southern Gaza.
This offer comes amid significant public pressure and mass protests in Israel, where families of hostages have demanded urgent government action, including a ceasefire with Hamas. However, Netanyahu has rejected calls for a ceasefire, maintaining that military action remains the only viable solution to ensure the hostages’ release, despite his defense officials warning that a negotiated deal may be the only effective option.
Israel estimates that 101 hostages remain in Gaza, although it is believed that around one-third of them may have died. Netanyahu has vowed to eliminate Hamas, declaring, “Hamas will no longer exist in Gaza. The best is yet to come.”
Escalating Conflict and Humanitarian Crisis
Meanwhile, the Palestinian Ministry of Health reports that the death toll in Gaza has surpassed 44,700, including nearly 17,500 children, as Israeli airstrikes continue unabated. Thousands more are feared buried under rubble, with widespread destruction contributing to the growing threat of disease and further casualties.
Over 104,000 Palestinians have been injured, with 11,000 people still missing as rescue efforts are hampered by ongoing violence. In the occupied West Bank, at least 785 Palestinians, including 167 children, have been killed, with over 6,250 injured.
International Reactions
Israel’s military campaign has faced global criticism, with accusations of war crimes and genocide. The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is currently reviewing allegations that Israel’s actions violate international law, including the Geneva Conventions. Reports from the United Nations indicate that over 80% of civilian casualties in Gaza resulted from Israeli airstrikes targeting residential buildings.
The situation remains dire, with escalating violence, severe humanitarian conditions, and international condemnation complicating efforts to address the conflict.
