Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar recently met with United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken and National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan during his official visit to the US.
These high-level meetings focused on strengthening bilateral ties, addressing global challenges, and enhancing strategic cooperation between the two nations.
However, the visit coincided with the intensification of pro-Khalistan protests in Washington, D.C., where demonstrators criticized the Indian government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Protesters accused the Modi administration of orchestrating international killings and running espionage networks targeting Sikhs in Western countries.
The protests, marked by chants of “End Modi Politics,” called for sanctions against the Indian government and demanded justice for the alleged extrajudicial killings of Sikh activists.
The demonstrators also accused Jaishankar of supporting policies that target Sikh activists abroad.
Protest organizers claimed that his visit to the US was an attempt to safeguard the political and economic alliance between Modi and Indian industrialist Gautam Adani, a controversial figure frequently accused of benefiting from favorable policies under the current Indian administration.
The protests highlighted the growing discontent among the Sikh diaspora in the West, particularly in the US, Canada, and the UK, over what they perceive as systematic targeting of Sikh activists by the Indian government.
Pro-Khalistan supporters have intensified their campaigns in recent years, alleging human rights violations and advocating for a separate Sikh homeland.
While the official agenda of Jaishankar’s visit included discussions on global security, trade, and technology collaboration, the parallel protests underscored the growing international spotlight on India’s domestic policies and alleged treatment of minority groups.
The Indian government has yet to respond to the specific accusations made during the Washington protests.
Meanwhile, the demonstrations reflect a persistent challenge in balancing India’s international diplomacy with addressing concerns raised by its diaspora communities abroad.
