The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has vowed to take strict action against those responsible for the gun attack on Kurram Deputy Commissioner (DC) Javedullah Mehsud. Despite a peace agreement following extensive negotiations between warring tribes, the government emphasized that no leniency will be shown to the attackers or their associates.
The decision came after an emergency meeting chaired by Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, who reviewed the situation following the Bagan firing incident. The meeting, attended by the Chief Secretary, police chief, and other officials, resolved that those behind the attack would face immediate legal action.
The gun attack occurred hours earlier in the Bagan area, injuring not only the Deputy Commissioner but also six others, including Frontier Constabulary personnel, a police officer, and four civilians. All victims were quickly taken to the hospital.
During the emergency meeting, it was determined that local residents were responsible for the attack, which was considered a violation of the peace agreement. Authorities have announced their intention to arrest the perpetrators without delay, with FIRs being filed and “head money” set for those involved to ensure their elimination.
The provincial authorities made it clear that they are committed to upholding law and order in the region and will not show leniency to anyone involved in the attack. Furthermore, the government has identified five individuals linked to the assault.
The violence in Kurram has been a longstanding issue, claiming over 130 lives and injuring many others in recent months. A peace deal was finally reached on January 1 after around 50 days of negotiations between tribal elders. This agreement, facilitated by the Grand Jirga, included commitments such as surrendering private weapons and dismantling bunkers.
The hope was that the peace deal would stabilize the region, especially after violence had caused food and medicine shortages, leading to the closure of the Tal-Parachinar Road. The ongoing unrest has already disrupted relief efforts, with a truck convoy carrying essential supplies to the area halted due to the recent attack.
Despite the attack, authorities confirmed that the Deputy Commissioner’s condition is stable, and he is being transferred to Peshawar by helicopter for further medical treatment.
