Pakistani Commerce Minister Jam Kamal Khan arrived in Cambodia on Sunday for a three-day official visit aimed at strengthening bilateral trade relations.
The visit comes at a time when Pakistan is actively pursuing avenues for trade and investment to boost its economy, which has been recovering after narrowly avoiding default in June 2023.
The purpose of Khan’s visit is to attend the inaugural Joint Trade Committee and Ministerial Meeting in Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia.
These meetings will serve as a platform to discuss critical issues related to trade, investment, and economic cooperation between the two nations.
Upon his arrival, the minister was received by Pakistan’s Ambassador to Cambodia, Zaheer Uddin Baber Thaheem, as well as Tith Rithipol, the undersecretary of state from Cambodia’s Ministry of Commerce.
In a statement, the Pakistani Commerce Ministry explained that the primary objective of this visit is to strengthen trade ties between the two countries, identify new economic opportunities, and foster deeper cooperation.
The meetings are expected to cover several key topics, including trade facilitation, investment opportunities, and expanding market access for both nations.
This visit by Jam Kamal Khan is significant in the context of Pakistan’s broader efforts to revive its economy, which is valued at around $350 billion.
Since avoiding default last year, Pakistan secured a $7 billion loan from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and has been looking for ways to attract investment and enhance trade with different nations. Strengthening bilateral ties with Cambodia is seen as an important step in these efforts.
The Commerce Ministry further noted that this visit is expected to yield further discussions and agreements, which could provide valuable prospects for both Pakistan and Cambodia.
These talks mark a key moment in the deepening of economic engagement between the two countries and are expected to lay the groundwork for more fruitful collaboration in the near future.
