US President Joe Biden granted preemptive pardons on Monday to individuals who may face retaliation from his Republican successor, Donald Trump. The list includes former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Mark Milley, former White House chief medical advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci, as well as lawmakers from the congressional committee that investigated the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot. Additionally, police officers who testified before the committee are also covered by the pardons.
Biden’s decision comes amidst Trump’s repeated calls for the prosecution of his political rivals after reclaiming the presidency in November. In a statement, Biden commended these public servants as essential to democracy, adding that their work should not be undermined by politically motivated attacks. He expressed concern over the threats and intimidation some had faced for simply fulfilling their duties.
While Biden did not directly address Trump, his statement highlighted the dedication of these individuals who served the country honorably. Trump has long criticized Fauci, especially over their disagreements during the Covid-19 pandemic, and has been vocal about targeting figures like Milley, whom he perceives as disloyal. Milley, often cited for his outspoken remarks about Trump, was described in a recent book by Bob Woodward as calling Trump “fascist to the core.”
Reports from November suggested that Trump’s team was preparing a list of military officers associated with Milley for dismissal. Biden’s pardons are a clear countermeasure to ensure these individuals are protected from any potential retribution under a second Trump administration.
