The Punjab government has made a significant change to the vehicle registration process by amending Section 24 of the Motor Vehicle Ordinance Act of 1965. This new amendment simplifies the registration process, allowing vehicle owners to register their vehicles in any district across the province, rather than being restricted to their home district.
Previously, vehicle owners were required to register their vehicles in the district where they reside. With this update, residents of Punjab now have the flexibility to choose any district for vehicle registration.
An Excise and Taxation Department spokesperson explained that registration numbers are now being issued under a unified series across the entire province.
The spokesperson also reassured that there are no restrictions on the movement of vehicles between provinces, ensuring that residents can travel freely.
This move follows a recent shift in the province’s vehicle registration policy, which was designed to combat tax evasion and improve security. Under the previous rules, Punjab residents had been registering their vehicles in other provinces or Islamabad to bypass local taxes. The amendment, which was approved by the Punjab cabinet, is a response to these concerns and is expected to help curb such practices.
