The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has declined to participate in the upcoming negotiation session summoned by National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq. The session, intended to facilitate talks between the government and the opposition, is scheduled for 11:45 PM on January 28.
According to Senator Irfan Siddiqui, spokesperson for the government’s negotiation committee, PTI has not formally communicated a withdrawal from the talks. “The PTI has not notified us in writing about ending the discussions,” he stated.
However, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan confirmed that the party would not be attending the fourth round of negotiations. Speaking to reporters, he emphasized the decision to stay away from the talks.
Addressing the media earlier, Senator Siddiqui criticized PTI’s inconsistency, stating, “Negotiations cannot proceed if one side abruptly withdraws. Are we expected to negotiate with an empty room?” He urged PTI to adopt a more structured approach, noting that the agreed timeline for talks remains January 28.
Barrister Gohar previously stated that negotiations were “on hold” and contradicted earlier remarks where he cited PTI founder Imran Khan as announcing the end of discussions.
Earlier, Prime Minister’s Adviser on Public and Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah expressed disappointment over PTI’s stance. He emphasized that the government remains committed to dialogue. “Negotiations require a structured exchange of demands and responses. PTI must clarify its position rather than creating uncertainty,” he said.
Sanaullah further remarked that PTI’s expectations of external intervention in political matters were misplaced, adding that any confusion on their part would soon be addressed.
