The Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) has called for nationwide demonstrations against the recent amendments to the Pakistan Electronic Crimes Act (PECA).
The Senate recently approved controversial changes to the PECA 2025, which critics believe are designed to suppress independent media, social media, and freedom of expression. The law awaits presidential assent before implementation.
In response, the PFUJ has scheduled protests across the country for January 28 at 3:00 PM.
The union had previously urged the government and legislators to consult stakeholders before finalizing the amendments, but these requests were ignored.
Strongly opposing the changes, the PFUJ stated that the amendments undermine the principles of the constitution.
In their official statement, the union called on all local Unions of Journalists (UJs) to stage significant demonstrations at their respective press clubs, stressing the importance of solidarity in sending a clear message of rejection to the authorities responsible for these amendments.
