British-Pakistani Member of Parliament Mohammad Yasin has been appointed as the UK’s Trade Envoy to Pakistan.
Yasin, who was re-elected in the July 2024 general elections for a third consecutive term from Bedford, will serve as part of the newly formed Global Growth Team, appointed by Business and Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds.
Born in Mirpur, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Yasin completed his education at Degree College Mirpur before moving to the UK. In a statement on social media, he expressed his gratitude for the new role, calling it an “honour” to serve as the UK’s Trade Envoy to Pakistan.
“This is an incredible opportunity to foster stronger trade ties, promote investment, and unlock mutual growth between our two great nations,” he said.
Yasin emphasized his commitment to strengthening economic relations by working closely with the British High Commission in Islamabad and the Pakistani High Commission in the UK.
“Pakistan holds immense potential with a dynamic economy, thriving sectors, and talented people. I look forward to engaging with businesses, stakeholders, and leaders from both sides to build a prosperous future together.”
UK-Pakistan Trade Relations
According to the latest UK government statistics, total trade between the UK and Pakistan exceeded £4.4 billion in 2024.
- UK exports to Pakistan: £2.1 billion
- Imports from Pakistan: £2.3 billion
For Pakistan, the UK is its third-largest trading partner after the USA and China, while for the UK, Pakistan ranked as its 49th largest trading partner in 2024.
Yasin is optimistic that his appointment will have a positive impact on trade, benefiting businesses in both countries.
“This new role complements that work by bringing real benefits back home in the UK: supporting businesses, exploring export opportunities, and creating connections that open doors for growth and shared success.”
Part of UK’s Plan for Change
Yasin is among 32 parliamentarians appointed to work alongside Business and Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds as special trade envoys, tasked with boosting UK exports and investment worldwide under the government’s Plan for Change.
Reynolds emphasized the significance of trade and investment in driving economic growth, stating:
“Trade and investment are key to delivering economic growth, the number one mission of this government and a key part of our Plan for Change.”
