The long-running Ramzan Sugar Mills case took an unexpected turn after six years, with the complainant withdrawing his allegations against Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and his son, Hamza Shehbaz Sharif.
In a dramatic court development, Zulfiqar Ali, the complainant, appeared before the anti-corruption court and disassociated himself from the case. He told Judge Sardar Muhammad Iqbal that he had neither filed the complaint nor was he aware of the application that initiated the case.
“I withdraw this application,” Ali stated in court. In response, the judge directed Ali to submit an affidavit affirming his position.
Ali complied, submitting an affidavit in which he reiterated that he had no involvement in the case. He also clarified that he was unaware of the contents of the complaint, had not signed any related application, and had no knowledge about the construction of the wastewater drain near Ramzan Sugar Mills, which is central to the allegations.
“I have no objection if Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and his son Hamza Shehbaz Sharif are acquitted,” Ali stated in the affidavit.
The judge then asked if Ali’s statement had been previously recorded, to which Ali confirmed it had not.
A representative of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was present during the proceedings, which were adjourned until January 30 for further arguments.
Speaking to the media, Zulfiqar Ali emphasized that his statement in court was made without any external pressure.
