The official portrait of U.S. First Lady Melania Trump has been unveiled, taken just one day after her husband’s inauguration at the White House.
The striking black-and-white photograph captures Melania in a dark business suit paired with a white shirt, her hands resting on a reflective table in the Yellow Oval Room. The Washington Monument stands prominently in the background, adding to the image’s symbolic weight.
Renowned Belgian photographer Régine Mahaux, who has been documenting the Trump family for over two decades, was behind the lens. This marks Melania’s second official portrait, following her first term as First Lady.
Mahaux expressed her gratitude for the opportunity, stating, “To work with such an inspiring woman is a great privilege.”
Experts have analyzed the portrait’s visual and symbolic impact. Gwendolyn DuBois Shaw, Faculty Director at the University of Pennsylvania’s Department of History of Art, highlighted the intentional messaging behind Melania’s pose and attire. She noted that the portrait conveys a sense of determination and readiness, reflecting her approach to the role.
Fashion writer Ellie Violet Bramley pointed out that Melania’s corporate-inspired outfit and strong posture break from traditional First Lady aesthetics. She suggested that the portrait projects authority, signaling a more assertive and independent role in her second term.
Bramley also noted a distinct shift from Melania’s previous official portrait, which presented a softer and more approachable image. This latest portrait, she argued, underscores a new chapter in her public persona.
