The federal government has appointed Chaudhry Zulfiqar Hameed as the new Inspector General of Police (IGP) for Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P), replacing Akhtar Hayat Gandapur. The decision was confirmed through an official notification issued by the Establishment Division.
Hameed, a Grade-21 officer with extensive experience in law enforcement, was previously serving in the Punjab Police. His appointment marks a leadership shift in the K-P Police as the government aims to address ongoing administrative and security challenges in the province.
Meanwhile, Gandapur has been directed to report to the Establishment Division. Although an official reason for the leadership change has not been provided, sources indicate that the move comes amid growing concerns over law and order in K-P. The province has witnessed a rise in security-related incidents, prompting calls for stronger governance and improved policing strategies.
The appointment of Hameed is seen as part of the government’s broader efforts to reinforce law enforcement capabilities in the region. With previous experience in Punjab’s police force, he is expected to implement new strategies to enhance security, counter rising threats, and improve public safety measures.
Security analysts believe the decision to replace the K-P IGP may be linked to the province’s handling of ongoing security challenges, particularly in volatile districts. There have been increasing reports of unrest and a need for more proactive policing to maintain stability.
The transition in police leadership also follows recent federal scrutiny over administrative efficiency in key law enforcement agencies. Observers will be closely monitoring how the new police chief navigates K-P’s security landscape and addresses existing challenges.
As Hameed assumes office, expectations remain high regarding his approach to tackling law enforcement issues and reinforcing public trust in the police force.
