Former federal minister Khawaja Saad Rafique voiced his concerns on Sunday about the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA), stressing that no government should have unchecked powers to restrict the freedoms of its citizens.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Rafique acknowledged the growing issue of fake news but warned against excessive government control over citizens. He stated, “While fake news is indeed a significant problem, no government should be granted unlimited powers to tighten the noose around its people.”
Rafique emphasized the importance of consulting with media organizations regarding the PECA Act, urging that such discussions be held to ensure fair and balanced amendments. “There should be consultations with representative media bodies on the PECA Act, and decisions made by tribunals should be subject to appeals in high courts,” he added.
Highlighting the need for adjustments to protect fundamental rights, Rafique asserted, “Amendments to the PECA Act must be made through consultation with stakeholders to ensure the safeguarding of our basic rights.”
He concluded with a cautionary note, reminding that laws often end up being used against those who create them over time.
