The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has officially assigned an election symbol to the newly formed Awaam Pakistan Party (APP), founded by former Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi. According to ECP sources, the party has been allocated the “Ghariyal” (clock tower) as its official electoral symbol.
Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, who previously served as Pakistan’s prime minister, is the convener of APP. The party’s leadership also includes well-known political figures such as Miftah Ismail and Mehtab Abbasi, both of whom hold key positions within the party structure.
The formation of Awaam Pakistan Party marks Abbasi’s return to active politics with an independent political platform. His decision to launch a new party follows his departure from the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), with which he had been associated for years.
This development comes at a critical time in Pakistan’s political landscape as new parties emerge ahead of upcoming elections. Political analysts suggest that APP may aim to attract voters who are looking for alternatives beyond mainstream political parties.
Meanwhile, in a related development, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has withdrawn its reference against Shahid Khaqan Abbasi in the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) case. The case, which had been ongoing for several years, accused Abbasi of irregularities in LNG contracts. The withdrawal of charges may strengthen his political standing as he embarks on this new journey with Awaam Pakistan Party.
