Terrorists launched a second attack in as many days on the Fatah Khel police post in Bannu, resulting in the martyrdom of two police officers.
According to police officials, the assailants stormed the checkpoint before fleeing the scene. Bannu District Police Officer (DPO) confirmed that this was the second attack on the same post within 48 hours.
The previous night, militants had also attempted an assault on the Fatah Khel police post. However, security personnel successfully repelled the attack with swift retaliation, forcing the attackers to retreat.
In response to the latest attack, authorities have heightened security in the area and launched a search operation to track down the perpetrators.
Surge in Terror Attacks Across the Country
Pakistan witnessed a sharp rise in terrorist attacks in January 2025, with incidents surging by 42% compared to the previous month, according to data from the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS).
The report recorded at least 74 militant attacks nationwide, resulting in 91 fatalities, including 35 security personnel, 20 civilians, and 36 militants. Another 117 individuals sustained injuries, among them 53 security forces personnel, 54 civilians, and 10 militants.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) remained the most affected province, followed by Balochistan. In KP’s settled districts, 27 attacks led to 19 deaths, including 11 security personnel, six civilians, and two militants.
The tribal districts of KP (erstwhile FATA) witnessed 19 attacks, causing 46 deaths, including 13 security personnel, eight civilians, and 25 militants.
Balochistan also saw a surge in militant activity, with 24 attacks resulting in 26 deaths—11 security personnel, six civilians, and nine militants.
Punjab reported two militant attacks, leaving one security official injured. On the last day of January, militants launched a major assault on a police checkpoint in DG Khan’s Jhangi area, but security forces successfully repelled the attack without casualties.
Sindh and the federal capital, Islamabad, each recorded one attack, neither resulting in fatalities.
Additionally, the month saw two suicide bombings in Balochistan. The banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for one, while the proscribed Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) took credit for the other.
