The Free and Fair Election Network (Fafen) reported on Sunday that election tribunals have ruled on 30% of petitions, while 70% remain undecided.
According to Fafen’s latest report, three tribunals collectively ruled on nine cases, with additional verdicts issued by tribunals in Bahawalpur and Karachi. Of the 11 resolved petitions, six were filed by independent candidates aligned with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), four by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), and one by Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP).
As of January 2025, tribunals had delivered rulings on 112 election petitions, with 11 decisions issued that month. The report highlighted that all 11 cases adjudicated in January were dismissed. However, the pace of decisions accelerated in Punjab following legal challenges.
The analysis showed that tribunals in Balochistan had decided 41 out of 51 petitions, while those in Punjab ruled on 45 out of 192 cases. Sindh’s tribunals resolved 17 out of 83 petitions, whereas in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, nine out of 42 cases were adjudicated.
Regarding National Assembly constituencies, 25 out of 123 petitions had been decided, while for provincial assemblies, rulings were issued on 87 out of 248 petitions.
The Supreme Court had received 38 appeals contesting tribunal verdicts—24 from Balochistan, 10 from Punjab, and four from Sindh. Thus far, the apex court had ruled on three appeals, accepting one and rejecting two.
Additionally, the election tribunals dismissed 108 of the 112 petitions, while three were accepted. One petition was closed following the petitioner’s death, and re-polling was ordered for three seats in the Balochistan Assembly.
