The newly revamped National Bank Stadium in Karachi was officially inaugurated on Tuesday in a dazzling ceremony, setting the stage for the ongoing Tri-Nation Series and the eagerly anticipated ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025.
Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori and Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah presided over the ribbon-cutting ceremony, marking the completion of significant upgrades to the stadium ahead of the prestigious ICC Champions Trophy. The event was attended by key figures including Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Naqvi, Federal Minister for Science and Technology Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab, national cricketers, former players, and other distinguished guests.
Chief Minister Murad praised the PCB for completing the stadium’s renovation in record time. He reiterated the Sindh government’s commitment to fostering sports in Karachi, saying, “We are dedicated to providing world-class sports facilities in the city.” He recalled previous upgrades, such as the National Stadium’s renovation in 2018 to host Pakistan Super League (PSL) matches, and emphasized Karachi’s deep passion for cricket. Murad also expressed confidence in the Pakistan cricket team’s performance in the upcoming Champions Trophy, adding, “We hope our Shaheens will deliver an outstanding performance, with a fighting spirit on the field.”
The opening ceremony was a spectacle, featuring fireworks, a stunning light show, and live performances by celebrated artists Ali Zafar, Sahir Ali Bagga, and Shafqat Amanat Ali. The highlight of the event was the unveiling of the new pavilion at the University Road End, which has been transformed into a state-of-the-art facility. The PCB heralded the addition as a significant milestone in its ongoing efforts to improve cricket infrastructure in Pakistan.
The new pavilion boasts world-class dressing rooms for players and officials, as well as high-end hospitality rooms. The stadium renovations were completed in just four months, demonstrating the PCB’s efficiency and commitment to excellence.
Several upgrades have been made to enhance both the playing and spectator experience, including the installation of 350 LED lights to improve broadcast quality, two new digital replay screens, and the addition of over 5,000 new seats for enhanced comfort.
PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, who oversaw the project with multiple visits to ensure timely completion, praised the work of nearly 5,000 dedicated workers who played a vital role in the stadium’s transformation. Naqvi called the upgrade a testament to the PCB’s vision of elevating Pakistan’s cricket venues to international standards. He also announced plans to host a reception at the stadium for the workers later in the evening.
The National Bank Stadium, which previously underwent major renovations for the 1996 World Cup, now stands as a modern, world-class facility that will host both domestic and international matches. With this major upgrade, there is renewed hope that Karachi will continue to produce top-tier talent, further solidifying its place in the global cricketing arena.
