Reports suggest that officials of the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) have significantly raised their salaries, with no approval from the federal cabinet. While there has been no official confirmation from NEPRA, sources indicate that the salaries of the Chairman and members have been increased by three times.
This salary hike has stirred political and regulatory circles. Following the increase, the NEPRA Chairman’s total salary is reported to have reached PKR 3.25 million, while the members’ total salaries have surged to PKR 2.95 million.
Typically, the salaries for regulatory body officials like the Chairman and members of NEPRA are set under the MP-I scale, with basic salaries ranging from PKR 629,000 to PKR 772,000 per month. These officials are also entitled to housing allowances between PKR 146,000 and PKR 206,000, plus utility allowances of about PKR 35,000 per month.
The newly revised compensation package, according to sources, includes a basic salary ranging from PKR 700,000 to PKR 773,000. In addition, the NEPRA Chairman and members are now entitled to a regulatory allowance between PKR 631,000 and PKR 700,000 per month, similar to the allowances provided to judges.
Despite these reports, a NEPRA spokesperson has neither confirmed nor denied the salary increase.
