KARACHI: Sindh’s Transport Department has initiated a province-wide crackdown on unfit commercial vehicles.
Provincial Transport Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon highlighted that numerous commercial vehicles registered in other provinces are permanently operating in Sindh, with fitness certificates issued by authorities from those regions. Memon questioned the authenticity and quality of these certificates, citing concerns over vehicles being insufficiently inspected at the time of issuance.
He emphasized that the rise in traffic accidents is linked to the presence of these unfit vehicles, which put both drivers and pedestrians at risk due to mechanical failures.
To address the issue, the Transport Minister announced that all registered commercial vehicles would now be required to obtain new fitness certificates in Sindh, issued by the Motor Vehicle Inspection (MVI) centers. These certificates will feature QR codes and other modern security features to ensure authenticity.
Additionally, commercial vehicles registered in other provinces but operating in Sindh will also need to acquire a fitness certificate before being issued a route permit or permit for renovation. The Minister stressed that a valid driving license will be mandatory for all commercial vehicle drivers.
These measures aim to reduce traffic accidents and ensure better road safety by controlling the movement of unfit vehicles. The government also announced the establishment of MVI centers for the inspection and licensing of heavy vehicles, as part of an effort to improve road safety amidst increasing fatal accidents.
