Hamas released two Israeli captives in a staged ceremony in Gaza on Saturday as part of a hostage-prisoner exchange during the ceasefire. The event took place in Rafah, where militants from Hamas’s Al-Qassam Brigades, wearing fatigues, balaclavas, and green headbands, stood guard around the handover area. The hostages, Avera Mengistu and Tal Shoham, appeared visibly dazed, and were handed over to the Red Cross. Mengistu walked with difficulty and was assisted by personnel. They were presented with certificates of liberation before being escorted into vehicles from the Red Cross.
Hamas militants staged the event, constructing stages adorned with large posters promoting their cause and honoring fallen fighters. The militants displayed weapons, including assault rifles and rocket launchers, and waved Hamas’ green flag in the square, which was surrounded by buildings damaged in the conflict. A slogan referencing Hamas’ October 7 attack on Israel was prominently displayed.
The ceremony was attended by hundreds of Gazans, with some people on rubble from bombed buildings and others watching from the remains of nearby structures. Hamas leaders also spoke at the event, highlighting their stance against Israel’s actions and the continued captivity of Israeli hostages in Gaza.
