Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan was able to speak with his sons, Sulaiman and Qasim, via a telephone call arranged by Adiala jail authorities in compliance with court orders, his lawyer Faisal Chaudhry confirmed on Saturday.
Speaking to journalists outside the prison, Chaudhry said the arrangement was made after PTI leaders earlier this month accused authorities of keeping Khan in isolation and denying him visits. The party had also alleged that the former prime minister was being deprived of basic facilities he was entitled to as an ex-premier.
On January 28, Senior Special Judge Central-I Shahrukh Arjumand approved Khan’s request for these amenities on humanitarian grounds. The Islamabad High Court (IHC) also instructed jail officials to facilitate a WhatsApp call and arrange a medical check-up by Khan’s physician.
During a hearing on January 23, IHC Chief Justice Aamer Farooq directed authorities to allow Khan to meet his wife, Bushra Bibi, and political leaders per jail regulations. Khan’s legal team argued that despite previous court rulings, several privileges had been revoked. However, following judicial intervention, a television and additional newspapers were reinstated.
The IHC chief justice also inquired about the feasibility of a WhatsApp call, prompting jail officials to confirm they had arranged a meeting based on trial court directives. Before concluding proceedings, the judge instructed the jail superintendent to issue further directives and provide an update to the court.
