The Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) has released its forecast for the sighting of the Ramazan and Eid al-Fitr moons in Pakistan.
Ramazan Moon Sighting Prediction
According to SUPARCO, the first fast of Ramazan in Pakistan is expected to be observed on March 2, 2025.
The new moon will be born on February 28, 2025, at 5:45 AM (Pakistan time). However, due to its low altitude of 5 degrees and its young age of only 12 hours, the crescent will be difficult to spot that evening.
The angular distance between the sun and the moon will be just 7 degrees, making it nearly impossible to see with the naked eye.
SUPARCO predicts that Saudi Arabia may spot the crescent on February 28, meaning Ramazan in the Kingdom could begin on March 1, while in Pakistan, it is likely to start on March 2.
Eid al-Fitr Moon Sighting Prediction
The commission also forecasts that the Shawwal moon is expected to be visible on March 30, 2025. This suggests that Eid al-Fitr in Pakistan may fall on March 31.
However, the final decision on moon sighting will be made by the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee.
Importance of Moon Sighting
Ramazan holds deep spiritual significance for Muslims worldwide. Since the Islamic calendar follows the lunar cycle, the start of Ramazan varies across countries based on local moon sightings. While traditional committees rely on naked-eye observation, modern technology and astronomical calculations now aid in predicting lunar phases.
