Canada will impose 25 percent tariffs on $107 billion worth of US goods starting Tuesday if the administration of US President Donald Trump proceeds with its planned tariffs on Canadian products, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced.
According to Trudeau’s statement on Monday, $20 billion worth of US goods will face tariffs immediately, while duties on the remaining $87 billion will take effect in 21 days.
“Our tariffs will remain in place until the US withdraws its trade measures,” Trudeau said, adding that Canada is in active discussions with provinces and territories to explore additional non-tariff measures if US tariffs persist.
China Vows Retaliatory Measures Against US Tariffs
China has vowed to take retaliatory countermeasures in response to the US decision to impose tariffs on Chinese products, including those related to fentanyl, the Commerce Ministry said on Tuesday.
The ministry condemned the move, accusing Washington of “shifting the blame” and using the fentanyl crisis as an excuse for trade actions.
The US claims that China supplies chemicals used in fentanyl production — an allegation Beijing has repeatedly denied.
China urged the US to “immediately withdraw” what it called “unreasonable and groundless” tariff measures, warning that the actions are harmful to others and themselves.
