ISLAMABAD: The registration process for Starlink, SpaceX’s satellite internet service, is underway in Pakistan, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) confirmed on Tuesday.
This follows a meeting between PTA Chairman Major General (R) Hafeezur Rehman and Starlink representatives at the GSMA Mobile World Congress 2025 in Barcelona, where discussions centered on expanding affordable broadband access, particularly in underserved areas, to bridge the digital divide and drive digital transformation across the country.
“The discussion focused on improving affordable broadband access, particularly in underserved areas, to bridge the digital divide and accelerate digital transformation,” the PTA stated.
The PTA chairman reiterated the authority’s commitment to fostering innovation and integrating emerging technologies for nationwide connectivity. He confirmed that Starlink’s registration is progressing with the country’s satellite regulatory body, a crucial step before the PTA grants a license for satellite-based internet services.
Starlink, known for providing high-speed internet to remote regions worldwide, shared insights on its satellite-based solutions and their potential impact on Pakistan’s rural and underserved communities. Discussions also covered regulatory frameworks and strategies for seamless service integration.
Earlier this year, Elon Musk announced that Starlink had applied to launch its services in Pakistan and was awaiting government approval. The Standing Committee on Information Technology & Telecommunication has since directed the PTA to expedite the process to introduce Starlink’s services as soon as possible.
