ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has expressed gratitude to US President Donald Trump for appreciating Pakistan’s efforts in counter-terrorism operations in Afghanistan.
In a post on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Wednesday, the prime minister reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to working closely with the United States to promote regional peace and stability.
His remarks followed President Trump’s acknowledgment of Pakistan’s role in apprehending Shareefullah, a top Daesh commander and key figure behind the 2021 Kabul airport bombing, which claimed the lives of 13 US service members and around 170 Afghans during the chaotic withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan.
Shehbaz described the terrorist as an Afghan national who was captured in a successful operation along the Pakistan-Afghan border region. He reiterated Pakistan’s longstanding commitment to eliminating terrorism and preventing militant groups from using its soil to threaten other nations.
“We remain steadfast in our resolve to combat terrorism in all its forms and manifestations,” the prime minister said, highlighting that Pakistan had sacrificed over 80,000 lives of brave soldiers and civilians in the fight against terrorism.
President Trump, speaking to a joint session of Congress, praised the arrest, calling Shareefullah a “monster” and stating that the terrorist was on his way to the United States to face justice.
“This was a very momentous day for those 13 families whose children were murdered. What a horrible day,” Trump said, thanking Pakistan for its cooperation.
Shehbaz reaffirmed that Pakistan would continue partnering with the US to ensure peace and stability in the region.
