Former Australia Test cricketer Stuart MacGill was found guilty of participating in the supply of cocaine by a Sydney court on Thursday, though he was cleared of involvement in its commercial distribution.
The 54-year-old, who had pleaded not guilty, admitted to using cocaine and introducing his partner’s brother to his drug dealer, according to state broadcaster ABC.
Prosecutors alleged that the pair later brokered a deal for A$330,000 ($208,197) worth of cocaine, but MacGill insisted his role was solely limited to the introduction, which took place at his Sydney restaurant in April 2021.
Just a month later, MacGill was abducted by a group of men, taken to an abandoned house, and subjected to a violent assault, including being beaten and threatened with a gun. Several individuals were later arrested in connection with the incident.
MacGill, a talented spin bowler who played 44 Tests but was often overshadowed by Shane Warne, is set to return to court for sentencing in May.
