Republican Bill
The US Senate successfully passed a Republican-led spending bill just hours before the midnight deadline on Friday, effectively preventing a government shutdown.
The bill, which was approved in a 54-46 vote, will keep the federal government operational through the end of September. The legislation will now be sent to President Donald Trump for final approval and signature.
The short-term spending bill includes a modest increase in defense spending while cutting $13 billion from non-defense programs. These cuts are in line with Republican promises to reduce domestic spending, according to NPR News.
However, the bill faced strong opposition from Democrats, who criticized it as giving Trump a “blank check” and failing to limit the administration’s efforts to slash previously approved congressional spending.
Despite their opposition, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer announced that Democrats would support the bill, known as the Continuing Resolution (CR), which had already been passed in the House of Representatives. Schumer explained that while the CR was a “very bad” bill, allowing the government to shut down would be far worse for the American people.
In his speech on the Senate floor, Schumer argued that a shutdown would have given Trump and his allies, such as billionaire Elon Musk, the ability to “destroy vital government services at a significantly faster rate than they can right now.”
Schumer warned that under a shutdown, the Trump administration would have broad authority to classify entire agencies, programs, and personnel as nonessential, leading to widespread furloughs with no guarantee of rehiring.
Government shutdowns are known to be highly disruptive and costly. During a shutdown, essential services such as air traffic control and law enforcement continue, but employees work without pay.
Meanwhile, nonessential services, like food inspections and the operation of national parks and federal buildings, come to a halt. Up to 900,000 federal employees can be furloughed, while another million work without pay until the government resumes normal operations.
Trump, who had previously criticized Schumer and other Democratic leaders, surprisingly praised the Senate Minority Leader for supporting the bill. In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump commended Schumer for showing “guts” and described the passage of the bill as marking “a whole new direction and beginning” for the country.
“I appreciate Senator Schumer, and I think he did the right thing. Really, I’m very impressed by that,” Trump told reporters after the vote.
The passage of the bill not only prevented a shutdown but also highlighted the complex political dynamics between the two parties, as Democrats were forced to support legislation they opposed to avoid the damaging consequences of a government shutdown.
