A delegation from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has arrived in Pakistan to conduct a thorough review of governance and corruption-related issues.
According to sources, the IMF team will begin meetings with Pakistani officials on Monday. The mission’s main objective is to provide technical assistance aimed at boosting Pakistan’s reform capacity, with a focus on strengthening governance and addressing corruption.
Sources indicate that the IMF team will also review budget proposals for the fiscal year 2025-26, and engage in follow-up discussions concerning technical support for governance reforms. Additionally, the delegation will explore measures to improve tax revenue, control government spending, and finalize proposals for the upcoming budget with officials from the Ministry of Finance.
The federal budget for the fiscal year 2025-26 is expected to be presented to the National Assembly in the first week of June.
The IMF recently commended Pakistan for its fiscal policy efforts, particularly in reducing public debt, controlling inflation, enhancing tax equity, and maintaining price stability. This recognition was given on March 26.
Last month, the IMF also reached an agreement with Pakistan on a new $1.3 billion arrangement and approved the first review of the ongoing 37-month bailout program.
