Pakistani-Canadian Women
Two women of Pakistani origin, Iqra Khalid and Salma Zahid, have once again been re-elected to Canada’s Parliament, marking a moment of pride and representation for the Pakistani diaspora. Their victories not only highlight their individual achievements but also reflect the growing role of Pakistani-Canadians in shaping the country’s political and civic landscape.
Iqra Khalid, a Liberal Party member, secured her fourth consecutive term from the Mississauga—Erin Mills constituency. She led her opponent by a margin of over 5,000 votes. The moment of victory was deeply emotional for Khalid, who was seen embracing her father in a heartfelt celebration.
Born in Pakistan, she moved to Canada in 1998 and has since carved out an impressive career in public service. Khalid holds a degree in criminology from York University and a law degree from the University of Michigan. Her academic background laid the foundation for her legislative efforts in Ottawa.
During her tenure in Parliament, Khalid has held significant responsibilities, including chairing the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights. She is also widely recognized for introducing Motion 103, which called on the Canadian government to develop a comprehensive strategy to combat systemic racism and religious discrimination.
Khalid has consistently spoken with pride about her Pakistani roots, often crediting her heritage as a source of inspiration in her advocacy for justice, inclusion, and human rights.
In a parallel success, Salma Zahid also secured re-election, representing the Scarborough Centre—Don Valley East riding. Garnering over 21,000 votes, Zahid has solidified her role as a dedicated public servant.
She holds an MBA from Quaid-e-Azam University in Islamabad and a Master’s degree from the University of London. Before entering federal politics, Zahid worked within Ontario’s civil service and engaged actively in community organizing, particularly in support of women and youth.
Since her first election in 2015, Zahid has been a vocal proponent of minority rights and multiculturalism in Canada. She has raised critical issues such as the plight of the Rohingya Muslims and has actively supported the Canada-Palestine Parliamentary Friendship Group. Her advocacy efforts underscore her commitment to international human rights and community empowerment.
Together, the re-election of Khalid and Zahid stands as a significant moment for representation and inclusion, reaffirming the contributions of Pakistani-Canadians to the political fabric of Canada.
