Sarah Khan
Pakistani television sensation Sarah Khan, known for her dynamic performances and a massive following of over 12.4 million on Instagram, is all set to return to the small screen with her latest drama Sher, where she stars opposite popular actor Danish Taimoor.
While the drama has generated considerable buzz, it’s not just the star power that’s catching attention—Sher has found itself at the center of a controversy even before its official release.
The drama’s teaser, released recently, has sparked criticism for its apparent visual resemblance to Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Bollywood epic Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela.
Critics and fans on social media quickly pointed out the stylistic similarities, with some accusing the production of copying the Bollywood film’s aesthetic. However, in a candid interview with Something Haute, Sarah Khan addressed the backlash head-on and offered clarity on the matter.
“If you watch the teaser carefully, you will understand the story,” Sarah explained. “The story of Sher isn’t inspired by Raam Leela. Yes, you can say that the teaser is inspired by Raam Leela. As I already said, the teaser gives you insight into the leads and their family backgrounds.”
She acknowledged the visual cues that may have sparked the comparison but firmly denied that the storyline borrows from the Bollywood hit. According to her, Sher follows a completely original narrative rooted in Pakistani culture and storytelling traditions.
Still, the internet remains divided. Some social media users expressed frustration, accusing the drama makers of mimicking Bollywood’s style. One user commented, “Don’t hide your obsession with Bollywood by calling it an inspiration.” Another added, “And they say India copies them.”
In contrast, many fans rallied in support of Sarah and the Sher team, emphasizing that visual inspiration does not equate to plagiarism. Supporters argue that exploring different cinematic styles can enrich Pakistani drama and bring fresh experiences to viewers.
With mounting anticipation and debate surrounding it, Sher is now one of the most talked-about upcoming dramas. Whether it silences critics or fuels more discussion, all will be revealed when the drama finally premieres.
