The Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) has approved the appointment of Justice Ijaz Swati as the permanent Chief Justice of the Balochistan High Court (BHC).
The decision was reached during a meeting of the JCP held on Monday, chaired by Chief Justice Yahya Afridi. The commission reviewed three potential candidates under a single-point agenda and unanimously endorsed Justice Swati for the role.
Following the meeting, the commission’s recommendation was formally forwarded to the Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister through an official letter. According to sources, the Prime Minister’s Office has been duly notified of the decision.
Justice Swati’s appointment now requires final approval from the President of Pakistan, in accordance with the procedure laid out under Article 175A of the Constitution.
Currently serving as a senior judge of the BHC, Justice Swati is recognised for his legal expertise and professional integrity. His nomination comes at a crucial time for the high court, which is handling a number of significant constitutional and administrative cases.
The Balochistan High Court has been without a permanent chief justice since the elevation of former Chief Justice Naeem Akhtar Afghan to the Supreme Court of Pakistan.
