MOSCOW: The Kremlin said Tuesday that no timeline has been established for peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, citing the complexity of drafting a mutually acceptable ceasefire and peace agreement.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, speaking to the state-run RIA news agency, emphasized that any potential agreement would require both sides to exchange, amend, and reconcile draft proposals through prolonged diplomatic engagement.
“There are no deadlines, nor can there be,” Peskov stated. “Naturally, everyone wants this resolved quickly, but the devil is in the details.”
He noted that both Moscow and Kyiv would need to submit parallel proposals, followed by what he described as “complex contacts” aimed at synthesizing a single unified document.
Peskov’s remarks came amid renewed international efforts to de-escalate the ongoing war, which is now in its third year. On Monday, U.S. President Donald Trump held phone conversations with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and several European leaders, including those from France, Germany, Italy, and the EU.
Following the calls, Trump announced that both Russia and Ukraine had agreed to begin ceasefire negotiations. “We are hopeful this marks the beginning of a path to lasting peace,” he said.
President Putin confirmed Moscow’s readiness to negotiate, stating: “Russia is open to working with Ukraine on a memorandum for a future peace framework.”
Despite signs of renewed dialogue, diplomatic analysts remain cautious. Deep-rooted mistrust and unresolved territorial disputes continue to undermine the prospect of swift progress.
No official dates have been announced for formal talks or the exchange of drafts. Diplomats warn the process could stretch over months, given the scale of the political, military, and security issues at stake.
Since the war began in 2022, tens of thousands have died and millions displaced. Previous mediation efforts—including those led by Turkey and the United Nations—have failed to produce a lasting resolution.
