A group of US-based Pakistani doctors and businessmen, known for their earlier efforts in backchannel diplomacy concerning Imran Khan, has returned to Pakistan in a renewed attempt to seek relief for the incarcerated Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder.
The delegation, previously involved in quiet negotiations and said to have met with both senior officials and Imran Khan during a past visit to Islamabad, arrived in Lahore earlier this week. However, sources indicate that, so far, the group has not secured a meeting with Khan during this visit. It is also unclear whether any contact has been made with key decision-makers. Upcoming days are considered crucial for potential interactions.
These visits are part of a broader unofficial effort by PTI sympathisers within the overseas Pakistani community to influence Khan’s legal and political future. Despite previous behind-the-scenes contacts, no meaningful progress has been achieved.
Insiders familiar with the matter believe the lack of progress stems partly from the continued aggressive stance of PTI’s social media platforms and its foreign chapters, especially in the US and UK. The military establishment has maintained its position of non-involvement in direct political negotiations, instead urging political parties to resolve their disputes independently.
Still, some PTI leaders are believed to be seeking unofficial engagement with key state institutions. The persistent criticism of the military by PTI’s official and affiliated channels — including misinformation campaigns and lobbying in Western capitals — is seen as a major obstacle to any reconciliation effort.
Sources within PTI’s second-tier leadership privately admit that the confrontational rhetoric has negatively impacted efforts to gain relief for Khan. There is a growing realization that easing tensions and adopting a constructive tone, especially online, could pave the way for productive dialogue.
As the overseas delegation continues its efforts, political observers are watching to see whether this visit marks the start of serious negotiations or becomes another unproductive attempt in PTI’s ongoing political struggle.
