Tough Opponent
Bangladesh head coach Phil Simmons has made it clear that his team will not underestimate Pakistan, despite the host nation’s recent patchy performances.
Speaking to the media in Lahore ahead of the T20I series, Simmons emphasized the dangerous potential of the Pakistani side and reiterated the importance of approaching the series with full seriousness and preparation.
“Pakistan is a dangerous side, and we are not going to take them lightly,” said Simmons. While many critics have pointed out Pakistan’s inconsistent form in recent months, the seasoned coach was quick to remind everyone of the team’s capabilities. “Everyone is saying Pakistan hasn’t been playing well, but Pakistan is still Pakistan — they have the ability to beat anyone,” he remarked, highlighting the respect his team holds for their opponents.
Simmons also expressed optimism about his squad’s chances in the series, despite missing several key players. He acknowledged the challenges that come with an incomplete roster but framed it as a positive opportunity for emerging talent. “When senior players are unavailable, it creates opportunities for youngsters. Often, one of them turns out to be a great find,” he said. Notably, the team will be without experienced pacer Mustafizur Rahman, whose absence Simmons described as significant.
To counter the challenge of unfamiliar playing conditions, the coach revealed that some players who have participated in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) have shared valuable information about local pitches and environments. “Some of our players have featured in the PSL, and they’ve provided helpful information about the conditions here,” he noted.
Despite the setbacks, Simmons projected confidence in his squad’s readiness and spirit. “We will miss our key players, but we are determined to put up a strong performance with the current squad,” he affirmed.
He also spoke warmly about his personal ties to Pakistan, calling the country a “special place” and recalling fond memories of playing there during his cricketing career. On the coaching front, Simmons welcomed former Australian fast bowler Shaun Tait’s inclusion in the support staff, stating that his experience would be valuable to the team’s development.
As the team continues its training at Gaddafi Stadium, players are engaged in batting, bowling, and fielding drills under the watchful eyes of the coaching staff. Fitness sessions and rest days for those involved in the PSL 10 final have also been integrated into the preparation schedule.
All three T20Is in the series will be played at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore, on May 28, May 30, and June 1.
