The United States has proposed a new ceasefire plan for Gaza, calling for a 60-day truce aimed at reducing hostilities and facilitating humanitarian relief. Under the plan, 28 Israeli hostages—both living and deceased—would be released during the first week. In exchange, 125 Palestinian prisoners serving life sentences, along with the remains of 180 deceased Palestinians, would be handed over.
Humanitarian aid would begin flowing into Gaza immediately after Hamas agrees to the terms of the ceasefire, according to details seen by Reuters.
White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt confirmed that Israel has already agreed to the proposal before it was forwarded to Hamas. The initiative was formally presented to the Palestinian group by former U.S. President Donald Trump and special envoy Steve Witkoff.
Leavitt emphasized that negotiations are still ongoing. “We hope this effort leads to a ceasefire in Gaza and the return of all hostages,” she said during a press briefing.
When questioned about Hamas’s response, Leavitt stated that the group had not yet accepted the proposal, to her knowledge.
The proposal represents a significant diplomatic push to halt the ongoing conflict and facilitate a potential pathway toward further negotiations. It aims to ease the humanitarian crisis in Gaza while addressing both Israeli and Palestinian demands through a structured exchange mechanism.
