US President Donald J. Trump has signaled the possibility of regime change in Iran, following what he described as “monumental” damage inflicted on Iranian nuclear facilities by recent American airstrikes.
In a series of posts on his social media platform, Truth Social, on Sunday, Trump praised the precision of the military operation, writing:
“The damage to the nuclear sites in Iran is said to be ‘monumental.’ The hits were hard and accurate. Great skill was shown by our military. Thank you!”
Shortly afterward, he issued a controversial remark suggesting a political overhaul in Iran.
“It’s not politically correct to use the term ‘Regime Change,’ but if the current Iranian Regime is unable to MAKE IRAN GREAT AGAIN, why wouldn’t there be a Regime change??? MIGA!!!” he posted, borrowing language reminiscent of his own campaign slogan.
Trump also addressed criticism from Republican Congressman Thomas Massie, who had denounced the strikes as unconstitutional. In response, Trump claimed:
“We had a great military victory yesterday in which we took the bomb out of Iran’s hands (and if they could, they would have used it),” though he provided no evidence to support this assertion.
The airstrikes targeted key Iranian nuclear facilities in Isfahan, Natanz, and Fordow. The action has drawn widespread condemnation, particularly at an emergency session of the United Nations Security Council.
Iran’s ambassador to the UN, Amir Saeid Iravani, denounced the attacks as a blatant violation of international law, affirming Iran’s right to retaliate under international norms.
China, Russia, and Pakistan also condemned the strikes. The Chinese representative described them as a “dangerous violation” of the UN Charter, while Russia’s envoy Vasily Nebenzya labeled the attacks a “humiliation of the international community.” Pakistan’s Ambassador Iftikhar Ahmad urged the Council to adopt a resolution demanding an unconditional ceasefire and the immediate resumption of diplomatic talks.
