DOHA – Qatar has temporarily closed its airspace and suspended classes in schools nationwide following Iranian missile strikes on U.S. military bases in the region, including the strategically important Al-Udeid Air Base near Doha.
The Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the move late Monday, citing “urgent security developments in the region” and emphasizing that the decisions were made to protect public safety and maintain national security.
“Iran’s attacks on foreign military installations have significantly heightened the threat environment in the Gulf,” a senior Qatari official told local media, requesting anonymity due to the sensitivity of the situation.
Airspace Shut, Flights Disrupted
The Qatar Civil Aviation Authority announced the suspension of all civilian air traffic, with incoming and outgoing flights either delayed, diverted, or canceled. The authority said the closure is a precautionary measure, pending further assessments of regional airspace security.
Passengers at Hamad International Airport reported confusion and long delays, with international airlines rerouting flights to alternative airports in the UAE and Oman.
Al-Udeid Air Base Evacuated
According to U.S. defense sources and media reports, non-essential personnel at Al-Udeid Air Base — which hosts thousands of American and coalition troops — have been evacuated, while combat aircraft and assets have been repositioned to undisclosed locations.
The base, which serves as the forward headquarters of U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), was reportedly among the primary targets of Iran’s retaliatory operation following U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.
Schools Shut as Precaution
The Qatari Ministry of Education announced the closure of schools across the country on Tuesday, citing the need to “safeguard students and educational staff amid evolving regional threats.” The ministry said the decision would be reviewed on a day-to-day basis.
Embassies Issue Alerts
The U.S. and British embassies in Doha have issued security advisories to their citizens, advising them to avoid public spaces and shelter in place until further notice. “This is a rapidly evolving situation. We urge all nationals to exercise extreme caution,” the U.S. embassy stated.
Tensions Surge in the Gulf
Iran’s latest military action marks a significant escalation in its standoff with the United States and Israel. Tehran described the missile barrage on American bases in Iraq and Qatar as part of its “Annunciation of Victory” operation, declaring it a direct response to the recent bombing of its nuclear infrastructure.
Qatar, which maintains diplomatic relations with Iran and hosts U.S. forces, finds itself in a delicate position as tensions mount across the Middle East.
Authorities said the airspace and school closures are temporary but may be extended, depending on how the security situation unfolds in the coming days.
