TEHRAN: Iranian authorities have launched a sweeping crackdown on individuals accused of spying for Israel, with more than 700 people reportedly arrested across the country, according to Iranian state media. The crackdown comes amid intensifying regional tensions following recent airstrikes by the US and Israel on Iranian nuclear facilities.
As part of the widening operation, Iran announced the execution of another alleged Mossad agent, bringing the total number of purported Israeli spies executed to three within the past week. Iranian officials claim these individuals were involved in sabotage and intelligence activities targeting key national infrastructure.
The arrests and executions signal a broader internal security response to what Tehran views as escalating foreign aggression and covert operations against the Islamic Republic.
Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi reiterated Iran’s steadfast commitment to its nuclear programme, dismissing pressure to abandon its technological advancements.
“Iran will not relinquish its nuclear achievements,” Araghchi told local media on Monday. “A war has been imposed on us under the pretext of nuclear weapons. Our scientists have made immense sacrifices, and we are determined to defend the progress we have made.”
The crackdown and firm rhetoric come in the aftermath of coordinated US and Israeli strikes on Iran’s Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan nuclear sites. While the attacks reportedly caused structural damage, Iranian authorities insist the core nuclear facilities remain operational and intact.
Observers note that the Iranian government’s recent actions reflect both a domestic clampdown and an attempt to project strength amid growing international pressure and the threat of further military escalation in the region.
