ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday commended the government’s economic team, particularly Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, for presenting what he described as a “balanced and responsible” federal budget for the fiscal year 2025–26.
Chairing a federal cabinet meeting in Islamabad, the prime minister also thanked allied political parties and cabinet members for their support during the budget’s formulation and approval process.
Turning to recent developments in the Middle East, PM Shehbaz welcomed the ceasefire between Iran and Israel, calling it a “critical breakthrough” in preventing further regional escalation and bloodshed.
He acknowledged the diplomatic efforts of Saudi Arabia and other regional actors, and said Iran had expressed appreciation for Pakistan’s role in helping to de-escalate tensions.
“The Iranian leadership specifically named the President of Pakistan and the Field Marshal for their contributions to the ceasefire efforts,” the premier said.
Addressing Pakistan’s position on Iran’s attack on Qatar, Shehbaz reaffirmed Islamabad’s strong ties with the Gulf nation, noting that Pakistan had swiftly issued a condemnation and reiterated its support for the sovereignty of all friendly countries.
On domestic matters, the prime minister directed authorities to ensure strict law and order during Muharram-ul-Haram. He instructed the Interior Ministry to work closely with provincial governments, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir to maintain peace during religious processions and gatherings.
Earlier in the meeting, the cabinet offered Fateha for Major Moeez Abbas Shah, who was martyred in a counterterrorism operation in South Waziristan.
