In a move aimed at providing financial relief to millions, the federal government has decided to abolish the Pakistan Television (PTV) license fee currently included in electricity bills, according to official sources.
The formal announcement is expected soon, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif likely to make the final declaration himself.
At present, nearly 40 million electricity users across Pakistan pay this fixed PTV fee, generating around Rs1.5 billion every month—or about Rs16 billion annually—from residential, commercial, and industrial consumers, regardless of whether they actually watch PTV.
Officials from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the Power Division confirmed that scrapping the fee is part of a wider strategy to reduce the burden of rising utility costs and inflation on the public.
“This relief measure will benefit all categories of consumers, whether they are domestic households, businesses, or industries,” a senior official said, speaking anonymously.
