Selective unblocking sparks buzz and questions on social media
In a surprise move, India has quietly restored access to several Pakistani entertainment figures on digital platforms—lifting restrictions that were imposed after the April 22 Pahalgam attack in Indian-administered Kashmir.
According to user reports, Instagram and YouTube are once again accessible for popular Pakistani stars like Yumna Zaidi, Dananeer Mobeen, Ahad Raza Mir, Azaan Sami Khan, Mawra Hocane, Ameer Gilani, and Danish Taimoor. Indian fans on X (formerly Twitter) also noted that three major Pakistani entertainment channels have resumed operations in the country.
However, the unblocking is incomplete: prominent personalities such as Hania Aamir, Mahira Khan, Fawad Khan, and Atif Aslam remain inaccessible to Indian viewers.
No official word has come from the Indian government confirming whether the move was deliberate or a glitch in platform algorithms. Some social media users have speculated that the restoration is limited to “B-list” celebrities, questioning the selectiveness of the rollback.
Why the Ban Was Introduced
The original restrictions went into effect after Pakistan condemned Indian airstrikes on May 7—events that reportedly targeted civilian zones in Kotli, Bahawalpur, Muridke, Bagh, and Muzaffarabad.
Before that, the digital clampdown began following the April 22 Pahalgam massacre, where gunmen killed soldiers and tourists in Indian-occupied Kashmir, killing at least 26.
Fallout from the Freeze
The bans had led to content disruptions like the delay of the Indo-Pak collaborative film Abir Gulaal (starring Fawad Khan and Vaani Kapoor) and the removal of Mahira Khan and Mawra Hocane’s promotional materials from Indian platforms.
What’s Back (and What’s Not)
- Back Online: Yumna Zaidi, Dananeer Mobeen, Ahad Raza Mir, Azaan Sami Khan, Mawra Hocane, Ameer Gilani, Danish Taimoor, and key Pakistani YouTube channels.
- Still Blocked: Hania Aamir, Mahira Khan, Fawad Khan, Atif Aslam.
Reactions from Both Sides
Indian fans welcomed the partial unblocking, while others criticized its inconsistency—questioning why top-tier stars remain offline. Meanwhile, Pakistani celebs haven’t officially commented on the restoration.
With tensions between the two nations continuing, this digital thaw—however uneven—signals a softening of cultural restrictions. Whether it evolves into broader access remains to be seen.
