At the conclusion of the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, the bloc’s member countries issued a joint declaration condemning recent airstrikes by the United States and Israel on Iranian territory. The statement, signed by Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, and Indonesia, addressed a broad range of global issues, including trade, financial reforms, and the escalating conflict in the Middle East.
The BRICS leaders expressed “grave concern” over the ongoing genocide in Gaza, urging an immediate ceasefire and the pursuit of a just, lasting peace through a fair and comprehensive resolution to the Palestinian issue. The declaration reaffirmed Gaza as an integral part of the State of Palestine and supported a two-state solution grounded in international law and relevant United Nations resolutions.
Strongly condemning the US and Israeli strikes on Iran, the bloc described the attacks as violations of international law and a serious threat to regional stability.
On the economic front, BRICS leaders criticized the United States for its unilateral trade tariffs, highlighting that such measures undermine the multilateral trading system and disrupt global trade norms. The summit also emphasized the urgent need to reform international financial institutions, particularly the International Monetary Fund (IMF), to better reflect the realities of today’s global economy and ensure fairer representation for emerging economies.
