The Southend Airport plane crash on Sunday afternoon has forced the airport to close indefinitely after a dramatic fireball shocked onlookers and raised urgent safety concerns. Essex Police received reports shortly before 16:00 BST of a 12‑metre aircraft on fire at the Southend‑on‑Sea airfield, now confirmed by Dutch operator Zeusch Aviation as its SUZ1 flight.
Eyewitnesses Describe “Huge Fireball”
Witnesses described the Southend Airport accident as terrifying. John Johnson, visiting the airport with his family to watch aircraft, saw the plane turn sharply left shortly after take‑off, then crash almost inverted into the ground, sparking a huge fireball. “Within seconds, it hit the ground. There was a massive explosion,” Johnson told reporters, adding that he immediately called emergency services.
James Philpott, a nearby golf club employee, felt a sudden heatwave and saw thick black smoke billowing into the clear blue sky. “Everyone was shocked; people ran toward the crash site to help,” he said.
Emergency Response and Investigation
The East of England Ambulance Service dispatched four ambulances, supported by the Essex and Herts Air Ambulance. Essex Police, working closely with the Air Accident Investigation Branch, confirmed they are gathering evidence to establish the cause of the Essex plane crash.
Chief Superintendent Morgan Cronin urged the public to keep emergency lines clear and instead use the dedicated major incident portal for updates or to share information.
Local Impact and Statements
Passengers scheduled to fly on Monday were advised by Southend Airport to contact their airlines directly. Meanwhile, events near the airfield were disrupted: some people at Westcliff Rugby Club were briefly asked to prepare for evacuation, though this was later withdrawn.
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander posted on X that her “thoughts are with all those involved” and confirmed she is monitoring the fireball crash closely. Local councillors also expressed support for affected families and praised the swift action of emergency services.
