Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi arrived in Kabul on Sunday for a day-long official visit, marking a continued effort to improve Pakistan-Afghanistan relations, according to state-run Radio Pakistan.
Naqvi was received at Kabul airport by Afghan Interim Deputy Interior Minister Mohammad Nabi Omari. During his stay, he is scheduled to meet Afghan Interior Minister Sirajuddin Haqqani for high-level discussions aimed at enhancing bilateral cooperation.
Visit Follows Series of Diplomatic Engagements Between Pakistan and Afghanistan
Naqvi’s visit comes on the heels of several key diplomatic developments between the two countries. These include the revival of the Joint Coordination Committee (JCC), the elevation of diplomatic ties from chargé d’affaires to ambassador level, and the first round of Additional Secretary-Level Mechanism talks held earlier this month.
The visit also follows the signing of a Framework Agreement for the Uzbekistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan (UAP) Railway Project earlier in the week. Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar had announced the agreement during his own brief visit to Kabul.
In related developments, the UN’s special representative for Afghanistan, Roza Otunbayeva, proposed a regional dialogue involving Pakistan, Iran, and Central Asian countries to address the return of Afghan nationals in a safe and dignified manner.
Meanwhile, on Friday, Pakistan’s security forces thwarted an infiltration attempt along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, arresting five alleged suicide bombers, according to state-run PTV News.
